Various specialist societies of the different scientific disciplines as well as the Cantonal and Regional societies for natural sciences are member of SCNAT.

The Fribourg Society for natural sciences (Société fribourgeoise des sciences naturelles (SFSN)) welcomes experts of natural and mathematical studies as well as persons from outside the scientific community. who are interested in natural science, as its members. The society’s aim is to promote the studies of natural science and its applications in the Canton of Fribourg.
Each year, the SFSN – which was founded in 1832 - organizes numerous lectures and one excursion with a subject concerning botany or geology. Its bulletin features the society’s proceedings and includes reports from lectures and other contributions in the field of natural sciences and mathematics. The focus lies on research executed by members of the society or the faculty of science at the local university, as well as studies with a direct impact on the canton of Fribourg.
In addition, the society awards the annual “Louis Wantz Prize” for exceptional Matura Theses in a discipline of natural science. The SFSN is a member of the Swiss Academy of Sciences (SCNAT) and is directly affiliated with the Faculty of Science at the University of Fribourg.
